About the university : The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, was founded in 1958 as the Central Institute of English (CIE), as an institution to impart quality training in English for teachers. It was renamed the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) in 1972 and was awarded the status of a deemed university in 1973. Shillong (est. 1973) and Lucknow (est. 1979) are the other two campuses. In 2006 CIEFL was given central university status and accordingly came to be called the English and Foreign Languages University by an act of the Parliament. Now, the EFL University has 7 schools and 26 Departments. Dedicated to the study of English and ten foreign languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Persian), it is the only one of its kind in South Asia.

a) 15% of the intake on every programme is reserved for Scheduled Caste applicants and 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe applicants, with a provision for interchangeability between the categories where necessary.
b) 27% of the intake is reserved for OBC (non creamy layer) candidates.
c) Persons with Disabilities : On every programme, candidates with a minimum disability of 40%, have supernumerary places reserved for them to the extent of 5% of the intake.
d) Children/Wards of Defence Personnel (Army, Air Force, Navy) : On every programme, supernumerary places are reserved for children/ wards of defence personnel to the extent of 5% of the intake.
e) Kashmiri Migrants : 5% supernumerary seats are reserved on every programme for Kashmiri migrant
- All SC/ST/OBC and Physically/Visually challenged students registered for any UG courses are eligible to apply for scholarship and exemption from paying the tuition fee (if not exempted under GOI rules). However, they have to pay all other fees as prescribed by the EFL University from time to time.
- Only those who obtained 50% marks or an equivalent grade in their qualifying examination and 60% of the highest score in the entrance tests conducted by the University annually, are eligible to apply for scholarship, exemption of tuition fee, and book allowance.

The EFL University is not a fully residential university, and does not guarantee accommodation to every student. The University has five hostels: three for Indian students, and two for
international students. Subject to availability, hostel rooms are allotted, on a sharing basis, to students from outside the city pursuing full-time courses at the University. Students provided with such accommodation shall abide by the hostel rules and regulations
