Now Gujarat Govt. under pressure to get NEET exemption like TN

2017-08-20

As per a report published in the Indian Express on August 19th, the parents of Gujarat medium schools are urging the Gujarat government to go for an ordinance for NEET in the same manner as done by the Tamil Nadu government.  Just to recall, the Tamil Nadu government last week has successfully passed an ordinance that exempts students from NEET exam for 2017 admissions to Government medical colleges and government seats in Private medical colleges.  The Central Government has approved this request and now it awaits the nod from the President.

In Gujarat's case, the demand is for a separate NEET merit list in this years' medical admissions for students who are from the Gujarat medium schools.  It is important to note that students and parents of English medium schools in Gujarat are not supportive of this move.  Further, the report mentions that many medical colleges have completed the admission process already and the classes are about to commence.  Any change in the admission process this late in the cycle is likely to cause significant disruption in the curriculum timelines.  In Gujarat, 3630 MBBS seats and nearly 67000 students appeared for these seats as per the Indian Express report.
