Supreme Court vacates stay, Go ahead for IITs and NITs admissions
2017-07-10In a major relief to nearly 30,000 students who have been granted admission in IITs,NITs and GFTI, the Supreme Court has vacated the stay anf given a green signal for continuation of admission process with the merit ranks earlier declared.
Lifting the stay imposed on 7 July 2017 with hearing scheduled on 10 July, the Supreme Court has given a go ahead for counseling admissions in IITs, NITs and other GFTIs to continue, thereby accepting the justification of bonus marks criteria put forth by IITs. The stay was granted in light of a petition filed by 3 students challenging IITs decision of granting bonus marks to all students instead of only to those who attempted the questions under scrutiny. The 3 students had argued that their ranking had gown down because of this decision of IITs.
IITs opposed the contention, saying that the decision to award bonus marks to all candidates was taken by a committee of experts after exploring all options. “It is submitted that in case the ongoing counselling and admission process is disturbed, the admission procedure of more than 36,000 students in 97 institutes under the joint seat allocation programme for IITs, NITs, IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology and GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutions) would be hampered”. Seats to 29,425 students had already been allotted by the time the Supreme Court issued the stay order.
The joint seat allocation process encompasses counseling and admission to 97 institutes like IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs (Govt Funded Technical Institutions).
