SC lifts stay, NEET results likely by June 26

2017-06-13

The Supreme Court, on Monday , cleared the uncertainty over admissions to MBBS and BDS courses by lifting the Madras high court's stay on the declaration of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) results.

Nearly 12 lakh students appeared in NEET for admission to medical colleges for the academic year 2017-18.

CBSE sources told TOI that the board would require 15 days to release results of NEET-UG (undergraduate), and that they could be declared by June 26.

NEET is conducted every year by the CBSE to fill nearly 30,000 MBBS and BDS (dental studies) seats in government and private medical colleges. The test has been subject to major litigation and many private colleges do not want to lose the right to admit students through large “donations“ rather than based on merit.

The results were schedu led to be declared on June 8, but the Madras HC stayed the process on May 24 when it found the question paper in English and Hindi was identical, but different in the vernacular languages. The petitioner had alleged the latter was also more difficult.
