About Indian Maritime University (IMU) : IMU was established on Nov 14, 2008 as a teaching and affiliating university under the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, with Chennai as headquarters. There were 7 renowned legacy teaching-cum-research institutes under the Ministry of Shipping, and these were subsumed under the Indian Maritime University in November 2008. Currently, IMU has 6 campuses in India:
1. IMU Navi Mumbai Campus
(Erstwhile Training Ship Chanakya, Navi Mumbai)
2. IMU Mumbai Port Campus
(Erstwhile the Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research and the Marine Engineering Research Institute)
3. IMU Kolkata Campus
(Erstwhile Marine Engineering Research Institute and Indian Institute of Port Management)
4. IMU Visakhapatnam Campus
(Erstwhile The National Ship Design and Research Centre, Visakhapatnam)
5. IMU Chennai Campus
(Erstwhile National Maritime Academy, Chennai)
6. IMU Kochi Campus
Additionally, the University has 17 Affiliated Institutes.
Note
Admission in BTech and BSc (NS) is on the basis of IMU CET. However, CUET students can take admission for residual seats pending after third list, please refer details in Admission entry mechanism,
Admission in BBA is on the basis of CUET / Class 12 marks. CUET candidates will be given preferences.
For BSc (SBR), no registration in IMU-CET portal is required. Admission will be done by the institute concerned as per IMU’s eligibility criteria.
Campuses & Courses
(i) Out of the various campuses of IMU, B.Tech in Marine Engg is offered at Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai Port. Naval Arch & Ocean Engg is offered at Vishakhapatnam.
(ii) In the affiliated institutes, Marine Engg is offered at Coimbatore, Cochin, Chennai, New Delhi, Pune, Madurai, Mumbai.
(iii) In IMU campuses, BSc (NS) is offered at Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi
(iv) In the affiliated institutes, BSc (SBR) is offered at Palakkad and BSc (NS) is offered at Chennai and Pune
Intake : Not specified for IMU campuses. Intake in Affiliated institutes is as below :
720 in BTech (Marine Engg)
200 in BSc (Nautical Science)
40 in BSc (Ship Building & Repair)
Admission in approved by DG Shipping but not affiliated to IMU: IMU has listed 23 such institutes in the prospectus and specified that for admission to DGS approved programmes (B.Tech(ME), B.Sc(NS) & DNS) in affiliated / non-affiliated institutes, IMU-CET rank is compulsory, hence the candidates desirous of taking admissions to these programmes need to register in IMU-CET registration portal to take IMU-CET 2023-24 and secure ranks.
After conduct of IMU-CET, IMU will issue Rank Certificate to qualified candidates in CET.
Counselling : IMU will conduct Online Counselling ONLY for admission to its Six Campuses. Candidates desirous of getting admissions in Affiliated Institutes of IMU / other DGS approved MTIs may directly approach the College / Institutes of their choice after obtaining rank certificate.
1. Online Counselling for IMU Campuses will happen in two phases:
a) Phase I : Candidates with IMU issued rank certificate will be provided a portal through which they can select the Programme(s) and the Campus(s) where they desire to take admission. Candidates have to register on this portal by making a payment of Rs. 10,000/- towards Counselling Fee. The Counselling Fee is non-refundable if a seat is allotted; else Rs.9000 will get refunded.
The Candidate should choose multiple options in the order of their preference for Programmes and IMU Campuses.
b) Phase II : Based on the Rank, Social Category of the Candidate and availability of seats, a seat will be allotted provisionally to the Candidate from the list of options provided by them.
2. After allotment of seat the Candidate will be required to confirm the seat by paying the Programme Fee of Rs. 25,000/- (Non-refundable).
3. Candidates who confirm their seat will be issued with the Provisional Allotment Letter which has to be produced along with original mark sheets, certificates, physical fitness certificate, etc. at the time of verification, on the date mentioned in the letter.
4. Candidates who fail to confirm by the due date will be treated as drop out and will not be considered for subsequent Admission Lists for up-gradation or seat allotment due to drop outs.
5. There could be a possibility that the Candidate may not get a seat in the most preferred Programme/Campus in the First Admission List. But, they could stand a chance for allotment of seat in the Second or Third Admission List (if any). For this, it is mandatory that the Candidate should have confirmed the seat allotted in the First or Previous Admission List by paying the Programme Fee of Rs.25,000.
6. Candidates whose names have not been published in any of IMU’s Admission List will be entitled to a refund, after deducting the administrative charges of 10% of the Counselling Fee.
Reservations
(i) 15% of the total seats available to Indian Nationals are reserved for eligible candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe, 27% for Other Backward Class (OBC) candidates belonging to non- creamy layer (NCL) and 10% for General-EWS.
(ii) Reservation of seats for Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands, Eight North Eastern States (including Sikkim) and Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh in IMU, Campuses : Maximum number of seats reserved in a given Academic Year for the U.G Programmes put together in all IMU Campuses shall as follows :
a) Andaman and Nicobar Islands - 7 seats
b) Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands - 10 seats
c) Eight North Eastern States (including Sikkim) - 40 seats
d) Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh - 10 seats
Note: The allocation of seats for candidates from the above mentioned ‘Special States’, will be done after publication of the Second List based on the residual seats, if any.
Note for Andaman & Nicobar candidates : For Candidates native to Andaman & Nicobar Islands or domiciled there for at least five years, a separate CET for UG programmes (only technical courses) will be conducted by the Andaman & Nicobar Administration on behalf of IMU.
Medical standards : Strict medical fitness standards applicable for BTech Marine Engineering and BSc Nautical Science. Please refer prospectus for details.
Fee : Average annual fee is Rs.2,25,000/- (in IMU Campuses. Fee in affiliated institutes may be different).
Transfer to other Campus: A candidate who is allotted a seat in a particular Campus can be transferred to a different Campus for a semester or an academic year or for the full course duration, depending on the requirements of the University.
Passport recommended: It is strongly recommended that candidates seeking admission to the Marine Programmes have a Passport. Please note that the name in the Passport should be the same as given in the 10th Std. Certificate.
