IISc is a Deemed University, ranked No. 1 in India by NIRF, Govt of India, for the last 2 consecutive years. Besides other PG and research programs, It offers highly valued 4 Year B.Sc (Research) after 10+2.

IISc was founded in 1909 as a result of the joint efforts of Jamsetji Nussarwanji Tata, the Government of India and the Maharaja of Mysore. The Institute was formally vested in 1909, the foundation stone was laid in 1911, and the first batch of students started their studies the same year

Among the current faculty members, there are 51 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awardees, 74 INSA fellows, 97 IASc Fellows, 57 NASI fellows, 50 INAE fellows, and 56 J.C. Bose National Fellows, which is indicative of the high level of academic excellence of the Institute faculty.

In 2011, the Institute introduced the 4 Year B.Sc (Research) program. The students are exposed to research in the laboratories of the Institute.
