The Bengal Engineering College was the 2nd oldest Engineering college in India established in 1856 (Roorkee Engg College, now IIT-Roorkee, was the first to be established in 1847). Bengal Engineering College then was renamed Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur in 2004. In March 2014, Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur was taken over by the Government of India and converted into an Institute of National Importance through an act of parliament and renamed as Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur.
Mandate : IIEST, Shibpur represent a new class of Institute with an emphasis on post graduate programmes and beyond as well as advanced research in many special areas.
Courses Offered : The institute offers admission to 10 engineering disciplines including Architecture (All 4-year Full Time B. Tech. programmes except Architecture which takes 5 year to get the B. Arch degree) through JEE-Mains with 50% student from the home state (WB) and 50% from other states.
