Admissions are through the CMI Entrance Test, which will be held on May 7, 2023. Students who excel in National Olympiads in Mathematics and Physics conducted by HBSCE and the Indian Computing Olympiad conducted by IARCS may be exempted from the entrance exam. The institute admits around 30-40 students every year, and the teaching programs are run in cooperation with the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai.

The courses are taught by the faculty of CMI and IMSc as well as distinguished visiting scientists from other academic institutions, such as the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, and the Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris.
