Indian students enrolment into US Universities drops

2020-12-03

The 2020 report by Open Doors reveals that the enrolment of Indian students in US Universities dropped in the year 2019-20.  Open Doors is a comprehensive information resource on international students and scholars studying or teaching at higher education institutions in the United States.  This report is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the Institute of International Education.

As per the report, the enrolment of Indian students dropped 4.4% in 2019-20 as compared to the previous year.  The enrolment in 2019-20 was 193,124 students whereas it was 202,014 in 2018-19.   The 2019-20 data still puts Indian student enrolment at #2, just below the Chinese.  So, while Chinese students made up 34.6% of the total international students enroled into US Universities, the corresponding percentage of Indian students was 18% of the total.

Over the last five years, Indian student enrolment into the US has grown by 45% while it has grown by a whopping 84% over the last 10 years.

The drop in last year's enrolment has been primarily attributed to the Trump administrations stringent immigration policies.  The uncertainity thus created doubts in the minds of many prospective students in re-evaluating their overseas education options.  The major gainer as a result last year was Canada which saw an increase in intake of international students into its Universities.
