AIIMS & JIPMER MBBS Exams Scrapped - Admissions via NEET
2019-11-28It is now confirmed that starting 2020 session, AIIMS and JIPMER will not conduct Entrance Exams for admissions to their MBBS programs. Instead, the admissions shall be based on the NEET ranks of students.
This announcement was made as part of the Minister of HRD, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank when responding to a questionnaire in the floor of the Lok Sabha on the 25th of Nov, 2019. This was in response to a written question by the DMK MPs of Tamil Nadu, Dr. Kalanidhi Veeraswami and Shri A. Raja regarding the details of MBBS Entrance Exams being conducted as on date and whether there were plans to have a single exam for all admissions in future.

"...the admission to MBBS course in AIIMS and JIPMER will be made through NEET from the academic year 2020-21 onwards. This will ensure acommon standard of medical education in the country and the students will not have to appear in multiple exams."

AIIMS 2020 MBBS Exam Announcement - What happens now?
Note that both AIIMS and JIPMER are yet to make these announcements at their ends on their respective websites. But since the MHRD, under which both institutions ultimately report to, has done so implies that very soon both AIIMS and JIPMER would have to follow-up with some announcements in this regard. It is important to note that AIIMS had announced the dates of the 2020 MBBS and Nursing Entrance Exams in August 2019. Given the new developemts, the AIIMS MBBS announcement may be redundant.
From 50 exams in 2016 to 3 exams in 2017-2019 to 1 in 2020
Until 2016, each state Govt was free to conduct own admission tests for the MBBS programs offered in their respective states. Similarly, the Private medical colleges and Deemed-to-be-Universties offering UG medical programs were also conducting thier own MBBS & BDS entrance exams.
This changed in 2017 when NEET was made the common entrance exam replacing all Govt, Govt Aided and Private Medical colleges & Deemed-to-be-Universities conducting their MBBS entrance exams across the country. Besides NEET, only AIIMS & JIPMER were allowed to conduct their own entrance exams as they were autonomous entities and were accorded institutes of national importance titles by the Act of Parliament. With the latest announcement in Parliament this week, NEET is likely to remain the only entrance exam for admission to all the MBBS seats across the country.
